### The Story of Lutron – A Bright Idea That Changed the World

Lutron's long journey began in the late 1950s in founder Joel Spira's homemade lab, located in New York City.

Spira was a young physicist fascinated by the aesthetic manipulation of light. He occupied the spare bedroom of the apartment he shared with his wife, Ruth, and transformed it into a lab. There, he set out to invent a solid-state dimmer that would allow people to create intelligent lighting control in their homes. This was the origin of what would become Lutron.

The idea was radical. At the time, lighting control was a complicated and expensive business, requiring bulky rheostats that consumed a lot of energy and generated significant heat. As a result, lighting control was mainly used in theaters rather than private homes. Most people would never consider having dimmers at home, as they were far too difficult to install.

### The First Innovation – The Dimmer that Changed Everything

In 1959, Spira revolutionised the market with a handmade dimmer that could replace a standard wall switch.

Spira's key technical innovation was replacing the generator with a thyristor, a type of transistor invented just a few years earlier. This represented a revolutionary shift, as rheostats and thyristors function in completely different ways.

Rheostats dim light by absorbing electrical energy, meaning electricity is converted into heat in the rheostat instead of light in the lamp. Thyristors, on the other hand, dim the light by interrupting the current flow to the lamp.

Using a thyristor made it possible to reduce the dimmer’s size so it could fit into a standard electrical wall box. Spira’s dimmer also generated far less heat and therefore used much less energy than a traditional rheostat.

### The Founding of Lutron Electronics – The Birth of Light Control

In 1961, when Joel and Ruth Spira founded Lutron Electronics, they knew lighting control could contribute positively to society in several ways. Dimmers were both elegant and functional, enabling people to enhance their daily lives through smart lighting. And the more the dimmers were used, the more energy was saved.

Spira’s first invention – a simple rotary dimmer – is still in use today and can be found on walls around the world. This product marked the birth of a whole new industry in light control.

### Innovation at the Core

Today, Lutron holds over 2,700 global patents in lighting control. In addition to the solid-state dimmer, Lutron has also developed: *the first electronic light control for fluorescent lamps, the first standalone preset lighting control system* and *intelligent control systems that manage both electric light and daylight.*

Lutron remains the only company to have developed integrated control systems for both dimmers and automated shades – enabling unified control of all smart lighting elements.

### From 2 to 15,000 Products

Over nearly 50 years of innovation, Lutron has invented hundreds of lighting control products and systems. The company has grown from offering just 2 products to a portfolio of over 15,000.

With advanced lighting control technology and a leading market position, Lutron is synonymous with exceptional quality, design, and intelligent lighting. They continue to lead the market in high-performance control systems for fluorescent lights, halogen lamps, magnetic low voltage, electronic low voltage, and LED light sources.

### Controlling Natural Light with Automated Shades

Lutron has also led innovations in motorized curtains for controlling natural light — an ideal way to create the perfect ambiance in any room, regardless of season or time of day.

With a patented system, the shades accelerate and decelerate smoothly, move in perfect synchronization, and stop precisely at the same level. They also reduce UV radiation that can damage art and interior. With both wired and wireless options, their systems provide smart, integrated control of daylight in combination with electric lighting.

Lutron offers a fully customized solution that includes power supply, motor, controls, and a limitless selection of premium fabrics.
